What to wear to a music festival

Festival fashion has gotten a bad reputation over the last couple of years. Lately all you can see are denim cutoffs short enough to qualify as underwear and flower crowns and it's easy to end up looking like a hippie disaster. Personally, I can't think of many things that are more fun than spending a weekend outdoors listening to great music but there's a fine line between dressing in celebration of your favorite festival and dressing up in a costume.

Much like Fashion Week, music festivals are filled with ladies trying to get their pictures taken but that certainly doesn't mean that the "less is more" philosophy should guide them.

By following just a few guidelines, you'll be able to avoid looking like a cliché:

Wear comfortable shoes. You will be walking miles on your feet all day and night, so make sure you bring cute shoes you can dance in. Heels are an absolute no on the festival grounds.

Limit yourself to one piece of any of the following: Tribal print, fringe, crochet or a flower crown. Piling on trends is a popular festival mistake while you should just stick to one bohemian piece.

How to mess it up:
                                                                  Bella Thorne
                                                          Alessandra Ambrosio

                                                     Kendall and Kylie Jenner

A bathing suit is not an outfit. Wearing a tasteful one piece with a pair of jeans shorts is one thing, but walking around with a bikini top is a big no no.

Layering is the key. The weather is always a wild card. Have fun with your outerwear: an army jacket, an over-sized embroidered jeans jacket or even a sweatshirt are all easy to tie around your waist during the day and throw on once it gets dark.

Music Festivals to check out:

1.Electric Daisy Carnival

When: June 20-22
Where: Las Vegas
Why You Should Go:The acts perform between sunset and sunrise as opposed to during the day. Make sure you stay hydrated – you'll get surprisingly tired considering the sun's not out – but besides that, it's a blast of a festival.

2.Bonnaroo

When: June 12-15
Where: Manchester, Tennessee
2014 Lineup Highlights: Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, Skrillex, The Avett Brothers, Elton John, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Lionel Richie, the Arctic Monkeys.
Why You Should Go: It's one of the greatest camping experiences at any festival in the world and the organizers constantly deliver a fantastic lineup. Once you survive four days sleeping outside and watching awesome bands in the intense Tennessee heat, no one will doubt your festival experience.

3.Firefly Music Festival

When: June 19-22
Where: Dover, Delaware
2014 Lineup Highlights: Foo Fighters, OutKast, Jack Johnson, Imagine Dragons, Pretty Lights, the Lumineers, Arctic Monkeys, Weezer.
Why You Should Go: Firefly can still be classified as a start-up, only launching in 2012. But the festival claims a unique home in the beautiful woodlands of Delaware and has two powerful lineups. There's camping available as well, so you can make a lot out of this fest!

4.Lollapalooza

When: August 1-3
Where: Chicago, Illinois
2014 Lineup Highlights: Eminem, OutKast, Kings of Leon, Skrillex, Calvin Harris, Lorde, Childish Gambino, Arctic Monkeys, Iggy Azalea.
Why You Should Go: It has a great reputation as one of the most organized festivals in the country. In 2012 when a storm shut things down for part of the weekend sets were rescheduled and the show impressively went on.
